How to find pipes and wires behind a wall before you drill

Every hole in a wall is a small bet. Most of the time you win and hang the shelf; occasionally you hit a copper pipe or a live cable and the afternoon becomes an emergency. A minute of checking removes almost all of that risk.

Know where services usually run

Cables and pipes are not routed randomly. Electricians normally run cable vertically or horizontally in straight lines from a socket, switch or ceiling rose — rarely diagonally. Plumbing tends to run vertically from below a sink, a radiator or a bathroom above.

  • Treat a 15 cm band directly above, below and to each side of any socket or switch as a no-drill zone.
  • Assume a vertical run beneath every radiator valve and bathroom fitting.
  • Be extra careful in kitchens and bathrooms, where both services meet.

The one-minute checks

  • Look at what is on the other side of the wall — a tap, a boiler or a socket tells you a lot.
  • Slide a magnet across the surface: it catches on screws and, sometimes, on steel conduit.
  • Knock along the wall and listen for the flat, solid tone that marks a stud or a batten.
  • Drill the first centimetre slowly, and stop the moment resistance changes.

Scan it with the phone in your pocket

Your phone contains a magnetometer — the sensor that powers the compass. It reacts to ferrous metal like steel conduit, nails, screws and reinforcement. Metal Detector : Gold Finder reads that sensor directly and shows a live signal meter, so you can sweep a wall and mark the spots where the reading spikes before you pick up the drill.

For timber framing behind plasterboard, Stud Finder WallScan is the companion tool — it maps the studs so you know both what to hit and what to avoid.

When to stop and call someone

A phone sensor detects ferrous metal well; it cannot see plastic water pipes, and no consumer tool is a guarantee. If you are drilling deep, working near a consumer unit, or you are simply unsure, isolate the circuit at the breaker — or hand the job to an electrician. The cost of asking is always lower than the cost of a repair.
