Do stud finder apps work? What a phone can and can't find

Search the App Store for a stud finder and you'll find dozens of apps promising to see inside your walls. Some reviews call them magic, others a scam. The truth sits in between, and it comes down to one sensor.

What a stud finder app actually measures

Phones don't have a wall scanner. Stud finder apps read the magnetometer, the same sensor your compass uses. It measures the magnetic field around the phone in microtesla (µT). Iron and steel bend that field, so when you slide the phone over a steel screw, a nail or a metal profile, the reading jumps.

That means the app never sees the wood. It finds the metal that holds the wall together: the screws and nails driven into wooden studs, or the steel profiles themselves in metal-stud walls.

Where it works well

  • Drywall on metal profiles. Common in apartments, offices and many newer homes. The profile is steel, so the signal is strong along its whole length.
  • Drywall on wooden studs. It works through the screws: you find a vertical line of fasteners, usually about every 40 cm (16 in), and that line is the stud.
  • Finding screws before you drill. Handy when you want to avoid an existing fixing or see where a board was fastened.

Where it struggles

  • Wood with few fasteners. If the screws are far apart, you get isolated spikes instead of a clear line.
  • Plaster, brick and concrete. Old plaster walls have nails everywhere and reinforced concrete is full of steel, so the reading is noisy.
  • Pipes and cables. Copper, plastic and aluminium aren't magnetic, so a phone can miss water pipes and electrical cables completely. A quiet reading is never proof that a spot is safe to drill.
  • Interference. Cases with magnets, nearby speakers, laptops and metal jewellery all move the reading.

How to get a reliable result

  1. Take the phone out of its case and calibrate it as the app asks, often with a figure-8 motion.
  2. Find where the sensor sits in your phone and keep that part flat against the wall.
  3. Slide slowly sideways and pencil-mark each peak.
  4. Repeat about 30 cm (12 in) higher and lower. Marks that line up vertically are a stud; a single spike is just a screw.
  5. Before you hang anything heavy, confirm it: a small test hole or a magnet on the screw head takes seconds.

App or hardware stud finder?

An electronic stud finder senses changes in density, so it can find wood directly and doesn't depend on fasteners. If you're mounting a heavy TV on wooden studs and want a second check, it's worth borrowing one. For metal-profile walls, quick checks and finding fasteners, a phone app is often all you need.

Stud Finder WallScan is built around that honest version of the job: a live reading, adjustable sensitivity and alerts, and a quick-start guide for calibration. For the methods that need no app at all, see our guide to finding a stud without a stud finder.
