Zakat calculator
Enter your savings, the debts you owe within a year and today's price of a gram of gold. The calculator compares the total with the nisab and works out the 2.5% due.
Type prices and amounts in your own currency. Nothing you enter is saved or sent.

How to use it
- Choose the nisab measure your scholar or zakat organisation follows, and type today's price of a gram of 24-carat gold, plus silver if you use a silver measure or own silver.
- Add what you own on your zakat date: cash and bank balances, gold and silver by weight, shares and funds at market value, business stock at sale value and money owed to you that you expect back.
- Enter the debts you must pay within the next 12 months. The calculator subtracts them and checks whether the rest reaches the nisab.
- If it does, and you have held at least the nisab for a full lunar year, 2.5% of the total is your zakat.
Zakat on gold, in grams
| Pure gold you hold | Zakat |
|---|---|
| 50 g | Below the nisab |
| 85 g | 2.125 g |
| 100 g | 2.5 g |
| 150 g | 3.75 g |
| 200 g | 5 g |
| 250 g | 6.25 g |
| 500 g | 12.5 g |
| 1,000 g | 25 g |
With a gold nisab of 85 g, zakat is one fortieth (2.5%) of the gold you hold. For other carats, multiply the weight by the carat and divide by 24 first.
The nisab: why calculators give different figures
The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due, set in gold and in silver. The National Zakat Foundation (NZF) in the UK uses 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver and lists 85 g of gold and 595 g of silver as another opinion. Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) uses 20 mithqal, which it gives as 80.18 g of 24-carat gold.
Silver is far cheaper than gold today, so a silver nisab is reached much sooner. NZF advises the gold measure if gold is your only asset and the silver measure if you have a mix of assets, which it calls safer and more beneficial for the recipients. Follow the measure of the scholar or zakat organisation you rely on.
What to include
- Cash in bank accounts, in your wallet and at home.
- Gold and silver by weight. The calculator counts gold as pure gold, so 10 g of 18-carat gold counts as 7.5 g.
- Shares, funds and other savings at their current market value.
- Business stock at the price you would sell it for.
- Money you have lent or that is owed to you, if you expect to get it back.
Debts you can deduct
NZF lets you deduct debts due within 12 lunar months, a year's instalments on longer-term debts, and arrears or bills that were already outstanding on your zakat day, but not interest. It suggests the 12-month and instalment deductions only if paying zakat would affect your ability to repay. Diyanet likewise counts zakat on what remains after a year's debts and basic needs.
Is there zakat on jewellery?
Scholars differ. As Diyanet summarises, in the Hanafi school gold and silver jewellery counts towards zakat once it reaches the nisab and has been held for a year, while in the Shafi'i school jewellery worn in moderation is exempt and jewellery kept as savings is not.
When is zakat due?
Your zakat year starts on the day your wealth first reaches the nisab. If you still hold at least the nisab one lunar year (hawl) later, zakat is due on what you hold that day; rises and falls during the year don't change this. Diyanet adds that zakat may also be paid before the year is up.
This calculator is a general guide, not a religious ruling. For your own situation, ask a scholar or your local zakat organisation.
Frequently asked questions
How much gold do you need to pay zakat?
The gold nisab is 85 g in one widely used opinion, 87.48 g according to the UK's National Zakat Foundation and 80.18 g of 24-carat gold according to Turkey's Diyanet. If you hold at least that much for a lunar year, zakat is due.
How much zakat do I pay on 100 grams of gold?
2.5 g of gold, or its value: one fortieth of the 100 g. If the gold is not 24-carat, convert it first: 100 g of 22-carat gold is about 91.7 g of pure gold, so the zakat is about 2.29 g.
What is the zakat rate?
2.5%, or one fortieth, of zakatable wealth that reaches the nisab.
Can I deduct my debts?
According to NZF, debts due within 12 lunar months, a year's instalments on longer-term debts and arrears can be deducted; interest cannot.
Do I pay zakat on my salary?
Not on the salary as such. Diyanet's answer is that what you have saved counts: once your savings, after basic needs and a year's debts, reach the nisab, your zakat year starts, and zakat is due if you still hold the nisab a lunar year later.
Can I pay zakat early?
Yes. Diyanet says zakat may also be paid before the lunar year is complete.
