How to use it
- Today's Hijri date is shown at the top, worked out from your device's date.
- To convert a Gregorian date, pick it in the first box.
- To convert a Hijri date, enter the day, month and year in the second box. A month has 29 or 30 days, so day 30 isn't always valid.
How the Hijri calendar works
The Hijri calendar is lunar. Each of its 12 months starts with a new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year has 354 or 355 days. Years are counted from the Hijra, the Prophet's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
Because the lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, Ramadan and the two Eids come about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year, and move through all the seasons over roughly 33 years.
Which calendar this uses
Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar, Saudi Arabia's official calendar, which is calculated in advance. Many countries begin Ramadan and the Eids only after the new moon is sighted, so local dates can differ by a day. Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) publishes its own calendar; for 1448 to 1450 its religious days fall on the same dates as here.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Hijri date today?
It's shown at the top of this page, calculated from your device's date with the Umm al-Qura calendar. Remember that the Hijri day begins at sunset, so after sunset the next Hijri date has already started.
What Hijri year is it?
Hijri year 1448 began on 16 June 2026 and ends on 5 June 2027. Year 1449 begins on 6 June 2027.
How many days are in a Hijri year?
354 or 355. Each month has 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon.
Why does Ramadan move earlier every year?
The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so each Hijri date arrives about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar than the year before.
When does Ramadan 2027 start?
On 8 February 2027 in the Umm al-Qura calendar, which matches Turkey's Diyanet calendar. Countries that wait for the moon to be sighted may start a day later.
Why do countries sometimes start Ramadan on different days?
Some follow a calculated calendar, while others wait until the new crescent is seen with the eye in their own country or region. Weather and location decide when it can be seen, so the start can differ by a day.
