What are natural flavourings?
A natural flavouring is a flavour made from natural raw materials by physical, enzymatic or microbial processes. Under EU rules that material can be of plant, animal or microbial origin. Flavourings are often sold dissolved in a carrier such as ethanol, propylene glycol or glycerol.
Why it's marked “Depends on the source”
Most natural flavourings come from plants and are halal. Two things can change that: a flavour made from meat or other animal material, and a carrier or solvent such as ethanol or animal-derived glycerol. The ingredients list rarely says either, so “natural flavouring” on its own is uncertain.
How to check the label
Look for a halal certificate from a recognised body, a vegan mark, or a more specific name such as “natural lemon flavouring”. Savoury flavours named after meat (beef, chicken, bacon) need a certificate even if they are made without meat.

- yoghurts and desserts
Good to know
- EU law defines a natural flavouring substance as one obtained from material of vegetable, animal or microbiological origin.
- “Natural flavouring” on a label doesn't have to name its source, unless it is named after one, like “natural vanilla flavouring”.

Not always. Most are plant-based, but some come from animal material, so look for a vegan label.
