How cat years work
Cats grow up fast. A one-year-old cat is roughly like a 15-year-old person, and a two-year-old cat like a 24-year-old. After that, each cat year counts as about four human years, so a 10-year-old cat is around 56 and a 15-year-old cat around 76.
Why not just multiply by seven?
The “seven years per year” rule doesn't fit cats. It makes a one-year-old cat seven, when it is already sexually mature and nearly full-grown, and it makes a 15-year-old cat 105, when many healthy cats reach their late teens. The four-years-per-year rule after age two matches the way cats actually age much better.
Life stage
- Kitten · 0–6 months
- Kittens grow fastest in their first months. This is when they get their first vaccinations, are usually neutered or spayed, and learn that people, handling and car trips are safe.
- Junior · 7 months–2 years
- A junior cat reaches its adult size and its adult body but often still behaves like a teenager: lots of play, climbing and testing limits. Good habits set now, from feeding to scratching posts, tend to stick.
- Adult · 3–6 years
- Adult cats are in their prime, healthy and active. The main problems at this age creep up slowly: weight gain, dental disease and too little activity, especially for cats that live indoors.
- Mature · 7–10 years
- A mature cat is roughly middle-aged in human terms. Many stay just as lively, but this is when kidney, thyroid, dental and joint problems can begin, often without obvious signs.
- Senior · 11–14 years
- Senior cats often sleep more and move less. Long-term conditions such as kidney disease, an overactive thyroid, arthritis and high blood pressure become more common, and cats hide pain well.
- Super senior · 15 years and over
- Many cats now live well into their late teens. Super seniors need comfort, routine and close attention to small changes, since several conditions can develop at once.
Every cat ages differently
- Breed, genes and size all play a part; some breeds tend to live longer than others.
- Indoor cats, neutered cats and cats with regular vet care often live longer.
- Long-term illness can make a cat older than its years.
- The human ages are a rough comparison, not a medical measure.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my cat's age in human years?
Count the first year as about 15 human years and the second as about 9 more, making 24. After that, add about 4 human years for every cat year. A 6-year-old cat is about 40, and a 12-year-old cat about 64.
How old is a 1-year-old cat in human years?
About 15. By their first birthday most cats are nearly full-grown and sexually mature, a bit like a human teenager.
At what age is a cat considered senior?
International Cat Care calls cats senior from 11 years, and the 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline guidelines from over 10 years. Cats of 15 and older are often called super seniors.
How long do cats live?
Many cats live into their mid to late teens, and some reach their twenties. Indoor life, neutering, a healthy weight and regular vet care all help.
How often should a cat see the vet?
Feline guidelines advise at least one check-up a year for every cat, and at least every six months for senior cats, more often if they have a long-term condition.
Is the dog age rule the same for cats?
No. Cats and dogs age differently, and dog charts also vary by size. Use a cat-specific chart like this one.
