Try on clothes with AI: what it shows and what it can't

An AI try-on app takes a photo of you and a photo of a garment, then generates a new image of you wearing it. That is useful for seeing whether a colour or cut suits you. It is not a fitting room: the picture is a prediction, not a measurement.

What AI virtual try-on actually does

The app does not dress a 3D copy of your body. It generates an image. Google, describing its own shopping try-on in 2023, said its generative model can show how a garment would drape, fold, cling, stretch and form wrinkles and shadows on real models, starting from a single clothing image.

The problem it tries to solve is real. Google wrote that it is hard to know what clothes will look like on you before you buy them, and cited a Google/Ipsos survey of US shoppers in which about six in ten were unhappy with an item because it looked different on them than they expected.

What it cannot tell you

  • Size and fit. The app has no measurements of your body or of the garment. A generated image can look perfect in a size that will not close.
  • How the fabric really behaves. Drape in the image is the model's guess from a flat photo, not a test of weight, stretch or stiffness.
  • Exact colour. Your photo's light, the store's photo and your screen all shift colour. Treat the shade in the result as approximate.
  • Small details. Logos, prints, buttons and lace can come out simplified or slightly wrong.

We could not find independent tests of how accurately any try-on tool predicts fit, so we would not rely on one for that.

How to get a better result

From making a try-on app: better input, more believable output.

  1. Use good, even light. Daylight from a window works well; avoid strong shadows and coloured lamps.
  2. Stand against a plain background so the model can separate you from the room.
  3. Face the camera, arms slightly away from your body, standing straight.
  4. Show your full body for dresses, coats and trousers, with head and feet in the frame.
  5. Wear fitted, simple clothes in the photo. Bulky jackets and loose layers confuse the shape underneath.
  6. For the garment, use a flat, clear, well-lit photo of the whole item, ideally on a plain background, with nothing covering it.

Planning a New Year's Eve or party outfit

Try-on is at its best before a specific event. Put three or four options side by side, save them, and compare: does the colour work with your skin and hair, does the length look right, does it match the shoes you already own.

Once you have a favourite, open the store's own size guide, measure yourself with a tape, and choose the size from the measurements, not from the picture. Check the fabric composition in the product description too.

Returns: know the rules before you order

In Turkey, the Mesafeli Sözleşmeler Yönetmeliği says the consumer may withdraw from a distance contract within fourteen days, without giving any reason and without paying a penalty. For goods, the period starts on the day you, or a third party you named, receive the item. The regulation lists exceptions, including goods prepared according to the consumer's wishes or personal needs, perishable goods, and goods whose protective packaging, tape or seal has been opened after delivery where return is unsuitable for health and hygiene reasons. The regulation does not name clothing specifically; check the store's policy for underwear and swimwear.

In the EU, the official Your Europe portal says you can cancel an online purchase within 14 days without giving any justification. Its listed exceptions include goods made to order or clearly personalised, perishable goods and sealed audio, video or computer software that you have unsealed.

A try-on image is not a reason to skip these checks. A personalised or made-to-order party dress may not be returnable at all, so read the store's terms first.

Privacy and respect

  • You are uploading photos of yourself. Before you start, read the app's privacy details on its App Store page and in its privacy policy: what is stored, for how long, and whether you can delete it.
  • Only use photos of other people with their clear consent.
  • Never upload photos of children, and never use any app to undress or sexualise a real person. Creating sexualised images of someone without consent harms them, and in many places it may be against the law.

The honest bottom line

AI try-on is a good way to narrow down styles and colours, plan an outfit for a party and avoid obvious mistakes. It cannot tell you your size or how a fabric will feel and move. Use it for the look, the size guide for the fit, and the return rules as your safety net.

Our app, Reve : AI Clothes Changer, is for iPhone (iOS 15.5 or later) on the App Store; it is free to download and premium features need a subscription, and there is no Android version. Upload your photo or choose a model, add clothes from your camera, gallery or a store, and the AI puts the outfit on in about 20 seconds. You can browse store items, try them on, tap Buy Now to open the store's website, and save looks. It shows how an outfit looks on your photo but cannot measure size or fit, so check the store's size guide.
