How to get water out of your phone speaker

You dropped your phone in the sink, got caught in the rain, or took one call too many in the bathroom — and now everything sounds like it is coming from under a blanket. The good news: in most cases the phone is fine and the water is simply sitting in the speaker grille.

Why water makes the sound muffled

A phone speaker is a tiny membrane that has to move freely to push air. When droplets sit in the mesh in front of it, they damp that movement and swallow the high frequencies first. That is why voices sound thick and music loses its sparkle before the speaker goes silent altogether.

Step 1 — dry the outside first

• Wipe the phone with a soft, lint-free cloth, speaker side down.
• Tap the phone gently against your palm, speaker facing the floor, so gravity helps.
• Leave it upright in a dry, airy spot — not in direct sun.
• Do not plug in a charger until the port is completely dry.

Step 2 — push the water out with sound

The trick repair shops use is a low-frequency tone. Playing a sweep around 150–200 Hz at high volume makes the membrane move in long, slow strokes, and those strokes physically push droplets out of the grille. You can usually hear it working: the tone starts gargled and becomes clean within a minute.

What you should never do

• Rice. It does not pull water out of a sealed speaker, and starch dust gets into the ports.
• Heat. Hairdryers, radiators and ovens warp adhesive and can kill the battery long before they dry the speaker.
• Cotton buds or paper corners. Anything pushed into the mesh drives the droplets deeper and can tear the membrane.

When it is more than water in the grille

If the sound is still distorted after a day of drying and a few tone sweeps, or if the phone went into salt water, get it looked at. Salt leaves a conductive residue behind as it dries, and that is a repair job, not a cleaning one.
