What is E955?
Sucralose is a sweetener about 600 times sweeter than sugar. It is made from ordinary sugar (sucrose) by replacing three parts of the molecule with chlorine. The body does not use it for energy, so it adds almost no calories.
Why it's marked “Generally halal”
It starts from cane or beet sugar and is changed by chemical steps that involve no animal material. The finished sweetener is a single pure substance, and there is no known halal catch for the sweetener itself.
How to check the label
No special check is needed for sucralose. Judge the other ingredients of the product, such as gelatin, colours or flavourings, separately.
Where you'll find it
- diet soft drinks
- table-top sweeteners
- sugar-free sweets
- flavoured yoghurts
- protein powders
Good to know
- In February 2026 EFSA kept the acceptable daily intake at 15 mg/kg body weight per day and found exposure below it in all age groups.
- EFSA could not confirm safety for long, high-temperature baking, because chlorinated compounds may form; the same uncertainty applies to baking or frying with it at home.
