- Depends on the source
Plant-based versions are common. Look for “vegetable origin” or a halal certificate.
What is E304?
Ascorbyl palmitate is vitamin C joined to palmitic acid, a fatty acid. This makes it fat-soluble, so it can protect oils and fats from going rancid. It is made by reacting ascorbic acid with palmitic acid, which usually comes from palm oil.
Why it's marked “Depends on the source”
The vitamin C part is plant-derived, but palmitic acid is found in both plant oils and animal fats. Most commercial supply uses palm oil, but the label does not say which fat was used. That is why it depends on the source. Ascorbyl stearate, also numbered E304, raises the same question, since stearic acid can also come from animal fat.
How to check the label
Look for a halal certificate from a recognised body, a vegan label, or a statement such as “from vegetable sources”. If none is shown, ask the manufacturer where the fatty acid comes from.
Where you'll find it
- vegetable oils
- margarine and spreads
- infant formula
Good to know
- EFSA's 2015 re-evaluation did not set an ADI but found no safety concern at reported uses; in the gut it breaks down into vitamin C and palmitic acid.
- E304 covers two substances: ascorbyl palmitate, E304(i), and ascorbyl stearate, E304(ii).
