What is E260?
Acetic acid is the acid that gives vinegar its sour taste and smell. As an additive it is a highly purified, almost water-free liquid. It is made either by chemical synthesis, mainly from methanol and carbon monoxide, or by fermentation of carbohydrates.
Why it's marked “Generally halal”
Synthetic acetic acid is made from natural-gas-based chemicals, with no animal input. Fermentation-made acetic acid comes from the same process as vinegar, in which alcohol is converted into acid. The list treats E260 as generally halal whichever route was used; if you follow a stricter view on alcohol-based vinegar, a certificate tells you the source.
How to check the label
No special check is needed for most people. If you avoid anything made through alcohol fermentation, ask the manufacturer whether the acetic acid is synthetic, or look for a halal certificate from a recognised body.
Where you'll find it

- salad dressings
Good to know
- US rules state that acetic acid occurs naturally in plant and animal tissues and is made by fermentation or by synthesis, for example from methanol and carbon monoxide.
- Vinegar is listed on labels by name as an ingredient; E260 refers to the purified acid.
- The EU specification requires food-grade acetic acid to be at least 99.8% pure.
